1984 Santa Sulky Driver
1984 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament
QX4361
This 1984 Hallmark Keepsake Christmas Ornament is made of etched brass and features Santa in a cart, called a "sulky," pulled by a horse and used for harness racing. The banner on the back of the small seat reads "Season's Greetings" on both sides of the pole. Harness racing employs Standardbred horses, which are known for the ability to trot or "pace," in a specific gait, while pulling the lightweight two-wheeled cart. Both of the wheels move and the sulky is attached to the horse's harness, allowing control of the horse's speed and direction, combining the athleticism of the horses with the skill of the driver. The ornament can stand on it's own, or be hung from the top and is packaged in a molded plastic tray in the original box.
Fun Fact: A sulky cart is often called a "bike" and the popular sport of harness racing continues to have a rich history and cultural significance for racing enthusiasts.
