#7 in the Hoop Stars series! Tin Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs. At Wake Forest University, this former St. Croix championship swimmer switched sports and became a basketball standout. Tim Duncan graduated with a degree in psychology in 1997 and joined the San Antonio Spurs for the 1997-1998 season. The seven-foot forward immediately turned the Spurs into a title contender and earned NBA Rookie of the Year honors. He was only the ninth rookie ever named to the All NBA First Team. The following season (1998-99), Duncan helped the Spurs become NBA Champions and was named MVP of the NBA Finals. Although the Spurs were eliminated in the 1999-2000 NBA Playoffs, Duncan was still tapped for the NBA All-Defensive First Team and was named co-MVP of the 2000 NBA All-Star Game.
