In the early 1900's when American LaFrance was formed, pumpers were still being powered by steam and pulled by teams of horses. Then gasoline power came into favor for both equipment and vehicles. American LaFrance made the transition, developing its first gasoline-driven fire engine in 1907.

Fast forward to 1950. American LaFrance was on duty, helping to fill the postwar need for fire equipment in the nation's growing cities and suburbs. Pumpers in the popular 700 Series were outfitted with centrifugal pumps that handled from 750 to 1500 gallons of water per minute!
