Passengers were attracted to the Hiawatha by its speed, streamlined styling, and luxury. Advertising promised a ride as "smooth as a gull on the wing." Inside the car, surrounded by panels of native wood such as walnut and maple, passengers could relax on the rear-facing sofa in the observation lounge and watch the miles retreat into the distance. The exterior of the car had been updated for 1939, including the horizontal ribs and bold colors, but the Milwaukee Road maintained the distinctive "beaver tail" design of earlier Hiawathas.
