This year marks the 60th anniversary since the debut of the Lionel 2333 New York Central locomotive. When railroading began to convert from steam power to diesel in the 1930's, the full-size New York Central was one of the mightiest new locomotives introduced. People were thrilled and captivated by the sight of this magnificent train both for its great speed and for its stunning art deco-inspired design. General Motors was responsible for furnishing the new F3's powerful first-generation diesel engine. When this train was unveiled, railroaders were astounded by its incredible speed, which shattered previous records. By the mid-20th century, diesel locomotives had replaced steam locomotives throughout much of the world. The new engines offered greater flexibility and performance as well as significantly lower operating and maintenance costs. 13th in the Lionel Trains Hallmark Ornament series.
