Twelve Days of Christmas began in 1984 with Partridge in a Pear Tree and followed the traditional carol through a full numbered run. The series is built around one of the best-known Christmas songs, turning each verse into a yearly ornament. That structure gives the category a clear beginning, middle, and finish, with each release tied to a specific gift from the song.

The first verse appears as 1984 Partridge in a Pear Tree, Twelve Days of Christmas #1, followed by 1985 Two Turtle Doves, Twelve Days of Christmas #2. Later releases continued through the familiar sequence of hens, birds, rings, geese, swans, maids, ladies, lords, pipers, and drummers. The series is especially satisfying because the ornaments form a complete song-based set instead of an open-ended theme.

The carol structure gives the set a built-in order, making it one of Hallmark’s clearest examples of a beginning-to-end series concept.
