1977 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament

QX1922

This 1977 Hallmark Twirl-About Christmas Ornament is part of the Tree-Trimmer Collection and features a bellringer in a belfry. The archway the boy stands in is decorated with big red bows and the top has ornate scrollwork above the metallic-gold plaque dated with "1977" in red, which appears on both the front and back of the ornament. He's wearing a green cap, red scarf, tan jacket, brown knickers, green stockings, brown gloves, and brown shoes, while holding a red present in one hand and ringing the gold, metal bell with the other. A sled full of gifts and a white dog with a red collar sit just outside the archway. You can manually move the boy around by turning the knob on the bottom. The importance of the role of bellringer has been lost with the modernization of society but historically, bells have always been used for more than the passage of time. Traditional churches rang the steeple bells as a defensive warning system, as well as, summons for religious and social events or announcements. Ultimately, the tolling of the bell represents change and milestones in life, making this an even more meaningful keepsake memory on your Christmas tree.

Fun Fact: Before Paul Revere was a patriot, he was a bellringer in Boston. When he was only 15, he and his teenaged friends were paid to ring the steeple's bells at the Old North Church, which were the first of their kind in North America. After the war, he found a new career casting courthouse and church bells and established a cannon and bell foundry in 1792, which cast approximately 400 bells, known for their sweet tone, which often came from the addition of a bit of silver in the alloy. Campanology (from the Latin "campana," meaning "bell," and the Greek suffix, "logia," meaning "study of") is the art, science, and study of everything related to bells, including how bells are used in religious and community traditions.
