1982 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament

QX1454NB

This 1982 Hallmark Keepsake Christmas Ornament features a metal piece in the shape of a heart with a cloisonné  angel hanging from the hollow middle. The back of the angel in inscribed with "PEACE LOVE JOY" and the dated copyright. The heart has a leaf design all around, with a heart at the top and a flower at the bottom, and is lacquered on both front and back. The brunette angel wears a blue gown with red and green bordering the hem and sleeves. She holds a long-handled trumpet, or buisine, and her halo has a radiating, red aura. Only the front of the angel pendant is lacquered.

Fun Fact: The artisans of ancient Egypt and Greece created the first versions of cloisonné using cut gemstones to inlay and frame in gold, long before glass enamel was used. The word has it's origin in the French "cloison," meaning "partition," due to the tiny metal wires artisans soldered onto the metal base, creating compartments to be filled with the colored enamel paste. As glass shrinks when heated, the tiny compartments had to be refilled and refired in the kiln 5-6 times, in order to achieve a full-filled cavity and create the smooth surface. The technique reach an artistic peak with the Chinese making it famous with vibrant dragon and floral motifs with turquoise backgrounds, during the Qing and Ming dynasties.
